Fundamentally you have an issue with the game mechanics, and why not? Could nitpick about transparency and experience and details and would if the OP would benefit, but bottom line is there are RNG factors, OP wants control. But the gist I catch is you still wouldn't really be satisfied. Look innit, say you implement a system for more control and less RNG as described - then it's still a problem, just less a problem at selected points is all. But way it sounds, you had a rough idea, you wanted to make it implementable with the least amount of rewriting, you didn't want an abuse mechanic, you wanted to chain everything together, and hey, Fido's got three masters. That would stop the button from being able to be abused, yet still keep the advantages of having a reset button, e.g. A button that you can use once every quarter year or so, where it resets the dungeon that you just went through, completely reseting everything, except if you retreat from the dungeon after you have reset, anyone who died or went over 100 stress in the first run will still be dead/ at 100 stress respectively. Now, if this idea is dumb then say so, but I was thinking of a system to stop over the top rng stopping a run that should've gone perfectly. That's just one of the rediculously stupid rng dungeons I had.

The paladin said no, took damage instead of healing, got stressed from the damage and had a heart attack. crits and stress invoc sent my paladin over the line, leaving him masochistic and on the edge of a heart attack 7 rooms into a long journey.

So I've had multiple runs where I was OVER-prepared and there was nothing I could do to stop the enemies, eg when I had 4 blockages 5 rooms into the dungeon, and I brought 2 shovels.
